MEETING MINUTES

Monday, April 14, 2003

Present were: President Judge Smith, Judge Kieser, Judge Anderson, Gary Harris, Joe Rider, William Knecht, Janice Yaw, Jason Poplaski, Joy McCoy, Joe Campagna, Kevin Way, Garth Everett and Robert Elion.

Joe Campagna, Gary Harris, Jason Poplaski, Robert Elion and Garth Everett all had nothing to report but ate a generous lunch!

Joe Rider reported that there was a Bill before the Pennsylvania Legislature that called for a gradual elimination of the Pennsylvania Inheritance Tax.

Joy McCoy brought to the committee’s attention the case of Dorn v Dorn, which modifies previous case law on the presumption of paternity.

Janice Yaw shocked the committee by congratulating the Court on its decision in Eck v Eck, which awarded counsel fees for dilatory filings.

William Knecht reminded the committee that this year’s Law Association Picnic would take place on July 16, 2003 at Grays Run Hunting Camp.

Judge Anderson reminded the committee that this year’s Law Day ceremonies will commence on May 1, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. in Court Room #1 and will include the winners of the essay and art contest from area schools. He urged everyone to attend as the featured guest for the presentations and for the reception that is to be held at the Old Corner Hotel will be the newest member of the federal bench, the Honorable John Jones.

Judge Smith, in response to a question, held a lively discussion on the issues confronting the Court with the prior record scores controversy.

And finally, Judge Anderson conveyed Chairman Ed Mitchell’s regrets at being unable to attend the committee meeting and promised that the minutes would be uncharacteristically concise.
